How we operate in conventional energy

The transport partner for energy operators

Grid transformers and industrial generators are among the heaviest indivisible pieces moved by road. A 100-tonne transformer can exceed the capacity of many bridges on the standard route, so every delivery calls for careful planning, not simply booking a truck.

As a freight forwarder, we coordinate through our network of specialist partners the weight distribution calculation, the check on the road structures and the heavy haulage permit required for a safe delivery, from one end of the route to the other.

How we work

Why choose us for conventional energy

Three things we settle before confirming the route.

  1. 01

    Weight distribution calculation

For heavy transformers and generators we check the axle pressure and the strength of every structure on the route before confirming it.

  2. 02

    Heavy haulage permit

We handle in full the permit required and the approved route for pieces that exceed the standard size and tonnage thresholds.

  3. 03

Access to multi-axle through the partner network

We configure trailers with 10 to 18 axles for transformers and generators of exceptional tonnage, drawing on specialist partners.

What we carry

What we carry for conventional energy

Heavy pieces, often above 40 tonnes, that call for an individual transport calculation and dedicated equipment.

Grid transformers
Carried on multi-axle configurations, with axle load calculations and a route approved in advance.
Industrial generators
Coordination for power plants and large generator sets.
Industrial turbines
Transport organised for heavy turbine components.
Power plant equipment
Transport of the various equipment needed for plant upgrades and refurbishments.

The specific challenge

Why every bridge on the route matters

A transformer over 100 tonnes cannot simply cross any bridge. Every structure on the route has to be checked for load capacity before the route is confirmed; otherwise the risk is either damaged infrastructure or a serious incident.

Through the partners in our network we coordinate that technical check together with the local road authorities and structural engineers, so the approved route is safe along its full length. The tonnage varies significantly: from 40 to 150 tonnes at transformer substations and from 80 to 300 tonnes for thermal or hydro power plant equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Conventional energy: frequently asked questions

Transformers and generators call for axle load calculations, bridge checks and a heavy haulage permit. Here is what you need to know.

How do you transport a heavy transformer of over 100 tonnes?

A grid transformer over 100 tonnes travels on multi-axle configurations or, where the route demands it, on self-propelled trailers, with a weight distribution calculation for every axle. As a freight forwarder, we coordinate through specialist partners the equipment that matches the tonnage, the route approved in advance and the heavy haulage permit, so the delivery is safe from one end to the other.

How do you check whether the bridges on the route can take the weight?

Before confirming the route, we check the load capacity of every bridge, viaduct and structure along the way against the real weight of the piece, together with the road authorities and structural engineers. That way we avoid both damage to the infrastructure and the risk of an incident, and where no standard route holds, we identify alternatives or temporary reinforcement solutions.

What kind of trailer do you use for heavy transformers and generators: modular or SPMT?

For equipment of exceptional tonnage we configure modular trailers with 10 to 18 axles, and for demanding manoeuvres or short-distance positioning we use self-propelled SPMT platforms. The choice depends on the weight of the piece, the route restrictions and the space available at destination, and we source the equipment through our network of specialist partners.

Who handles the abnormal load permits and the route survey?

We handle it all: the route survey and obtaining the heavy haulage permit for every country crossed, including coordinating police escorts where they are compulsory. The dedicated project manager runs the whole technical and administrative file, so that you receive an approved route and a clear delivery schedule.

How long does it take and how much does it cost to move a large generator or turbine?

Planning a generator or turbine transport usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on the structural checks and the permits required along the route. The cost is calculated individually, based on the weight, the dimensions and the distance, and the project quote includes the weight calculation and the CMR insurance.

Do you provide door-to-door transport and positioning of the equipment inside the plant?

Yes, we coordinate door-to-door delivery, from the factory of origin to the final location inside the plant, including the manoeuvre to position it on the foundation where required. Through specialist partners we also arrange the lifting equipment, cranes or SPMT platforms, for the safe unloading and placement of transformers, generators and turbines.
